TIMORESE FISH SELLERS
Another series I did for the Women’s Cooperative Boneca de Ataúro in Ataúro Island, Timor-Leste.
Ataúro has always been known as a fishing village hence the common sight of people selling their fresh catch from the sea on a long wooden stick across villages.
In the capital Dili, there are also these sellers with fish and any kind of produce hanging from a piece of wooden stick that they balance on their shoulders.
All embroideries work were by Catarina at the cooperative, and available for customizable purchase.
All profits go to the women for their basic needs and children’s education.

It was a fun challenge to work using regular printer paper, not-so-great-quality colour pencils, using the room window glass as my light table, and having only electricity 8am-midnight. Here’s some of my design processes, or redrawings, that I would’ve done much faster using Photoshop albeit probably less fun.

The residency manager, Tachya Gorreti, bought and cooked one octopus for an amazing lunch for us.
